MELISSA BORICH AND WANITA BERGANN
truly embody the essence of their Maleny boutique, Piece of Me, which combines an eclectic ‘hippy chic’ style with an appreciation for quality pieces that outlast trends. Often mistaken for sisters, the two grew up in different areas of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, travelled overseas and lived in cities before returning, happy to be surrounded by open spaces and a quiet lifestyle more conducive to their yoga and meditation practices.
Both women exude a natural beauty and sense of serenity; their glowing good looks are a testament to the health-focused lifestyles they lead. They share a warm friendship developed over years, with both valuing honest and respectful communication. They first met when their teenage children were still at kindy. Melissa was studying to become a yoga teacher and Wanita became one of her first students — she still does Melissa’s yoga classes in Maleny each week. Their friendship grew slowly until Melissa approached Wanita to become a business partner. I was a seamstress at that time, making bridal gowns, and Melissa asked me to alter a few of Kevin’s [Borich] stage outfits,” says Wanita.
“Through teaching yoga I had a desire to extend my practice into creating something I felt really good about,” says Melissa. “I felt there was a hole. There weren’t really yummy yoga clothes around, and I wanted to support people on their path by providing it.”
It turned out they made a great team: Wanita had a Bachelor of Business majoring in marketing and Melissa had been a Sydney-based model for 14 years, and bought her knowledge of the fashion industry to the table.
Today, both have their own projects on the go — Melissa is always deepening her yoga practice while Wanita is studying a diploma in interior design — however the boutique remains close to their hearts.
“The shop is our own little art space in terms of being colourful and eclectic — it’s like our own Aladdin’s Cave, full of treasures,” says Melissa. “We only share with people what we love, and we’re quite selective in our choice. We have very different backgrounds but it has just evolved easily for us.”
